This is 'Jaska', a needle felted reindeer. Her name means 'Quiet' in the Sami dialect.
She has been made by the process of needle felting. This is a form of soft sculpture which begins with a wire armature of her many pointed antlers.
They are then wrapped with roving (unspun wool) , needle felted using a very sharp, barbed needle and treated with a non toxic stiffening agent.
These antlers are then attached to a wire armature of her body.
Then her body is sculpted over a wire armature using the same very sharp, barbed needle.
The more the fibres are worked with the needle, the tighter the roving becomes and sculpting detail becomes possible.
This takes many hours of precision hand work.
Further details including eyes, hooves and final colours are added using the same process.
Jaska is wearing a handmade collar with tiny brass bells on it which I created myself and sewed together using a faux leather.
Her legs have a rigid wire inside each of them which are permanently adhered to the base.
The base is made from weathered barn board on which I have hand painted a Nordic inspired ancient tree symbol as a border. Vintage wood spools, wrapped with wool felt are adhered to the base as well.
The piece measures 10" tall by 11" long and is signed and dated on the bottom.
